The final workshop of Project DAWN (Drugs, Alcohol and Women Network) organized by the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), in cooperation with the Department of Anti-drug Policies of the Government of Italy) on 5th July, saw the participation of delegates from the partner countries, Italian governmental institutions and experts from the academia and the civil society organizations.

Discrimination, hate speech, and hate crime all have destabilizing effects on societal cohesiveness and human rights. With the increasing use of various forms of communication technology in recent years, the threat posed by hate speech has grown. Words employed as weapons can be transmitted globally in a matter of seconds, fuelling prejudices and provoking physical hate crime.
A seminar hosted by the Department for Anti-Drug Policies of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers in Italy and organized in collaboration with Pompidou Group will take place in Rome on 10-11 December 2015.

A workshop on hate speech and hate crime will be held in Rome from 27–29 October 2015. The event is being organized by the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), in cooperation with the Institute for International Legal Studies of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR) and other partners. The workshop is addressed to lawyers and law enforcement agencies and aims at promoting knowledge on hate speech and hate crime prevention strategies and actions.
Violent extremism cannot be defeated without interventions addressing the root of the problem – the specific ideologies and motivations that stimulate recruitment into these criminal organizations. There is no single approach which is effective or appropriate to prevent and counter the phenomenon. Cultural, sociological and context-specific considerations have to be part of the national and international strategies.
The effective contrast to hate speech through an action of training to journalists, bloggers and social media managers is one of the primary goals of the Prism project, which organizes a workshop on responsible information on 2nd july in Florence.
