UNICRI and SICPA sign a new agreement
On 29 January 2019 UNICRI and SICPA signed a multi-year agreement for the new phase of the UNICRI project on Security through Research, Technology and Innovation (SIRIO).
On 24-25 June, UNICRI held a trilateral workshop for Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine on countering the trafficking of radiological and nuclear (RN) material in the Black Sea region. The event was made possible thanks to the financial support of the Norwegian Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (DSA).
2nd edition of the Hackathon for Peace, Justice and Security
Within the framework of the 2nd edition of the Hackathon for Peace, Justice and Security organized by the Data Science Initiative and the Municipality of The Hague from 14-16 June, UNICRI, through its Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, invited participants to find solutions to the “True or False” Challenge on fake videos.
The nexus between transnational organized crime and terrorism represents a growing threat worldwide. The confluence of criminal and terrorist actors, tactics and resources enable them to gain stronger capacities to threaten peace, security and economic development. Terrorists are taking advantage of transnational organized crime in many contexts and by conducting many illicit activities spanning from the trafficking of arms, persons, drugs, artefacts and natural resources; to the kidnapping for ransom and other crimes including extortion and bank robbery.
The Hague, 10 July 2019. In 2017 UNICRI signed a host country agreement with the Netherlands, for the hosting of its Centre for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics in The Hague.
The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), through its Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, and the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) are organizing the 2nd Global Meeting on Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Law Enforcement. The meeting will be held in Singapore on 3-4 July 2019 and will see the participation of representatives of the law enforcement, academia, private sector, and from UN and INTERPOL Member States.
UNICRI and the Netherlands Institute of International Relations ‘Clingendael’ - International Centre for Counter-terrorism (ICCT) have signed a new agreement for the continuation of their activities in the field of preventing and countering violent extremism.
A Memorandum of understanding was signed by the Ambassador Thomas Greminger, Secretary General of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), and Ms. Bettina Tucci Bartsiotas Director, a.i of UNICRI. The agreement aims at strengthening the cooperation between the two entities and exploring possible convergences to develop joint initiatives in areas of common interest.

Within the framework of the 28th Session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ), the United Nations Office on Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect in partnership with the United Nations Interregional Crime and Research Institute (UNICRI), is organising a side event on hate speech and violent extremism.
The side event, entitled “Hate Speech and Violent Extremism as Driving Factors Leading to Violence and Atrocity Crimes” will take place on 23 May at the Vienna International Centre (Conference Room M7) from 2.20 to 3.10 p.m.
