UNICRI and Penal Reform International Sign MoU to Research the Intersection of Environmental Sustainability and Rehabilitation in Prisons

Vienna International Centre (Vienna, Austria) -

The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) and Penal Reform International (PRI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Vienna during the 33rd session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ).

Under this newly signed MoU, UNICRI and PRI will conduct a comprehensive study to address the critical challenges of environmental impact and sustainability in prisons. This research will explore current environmental policies within correctional institutions, assess their ecological footprints, and identify disparities in sustainable practices worldwide.

This initiative aligns with both organizations' dedication to reforming prison environments in ways that support not only ecological sustainability but also the rights and rehabilitation needs of people in prisons. The partnership underscores a shared commitment to developing policies that contribute to more humane and environmentally responsible prison systems.
