The International Association of Prosecutors (IAP) Global Training Academy and UNICRI are organizing a Webinar on the challenges involved in investigating and prosecuting chemical and biological crime. The Webinar will have a special focus on best practice mechanisms that may be used by prosecutors to successfully prosecute these grave offences. It will also review resources that are available to assist prosecutors, particularly the Prosecutors Guide to Chemical and Biological Crimes which has been developed by UNICRI. The Guide was funded by the European Commission within the framework of the European Union Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Centres of Excellence Initiative (EU CBRN CoE).

UNICRI has a broad mandate to design and implement improved policies and actions in the field of crime prevention and control. In 2006, it established the CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear) Risk Mitigation and Security Governance Unit to assist Member States to anticipate, assess and mitigate CBRN threats. In 2022 UNICRI, in cooperation with international partners, including the IAP, developed a Prosecutors Guide to Chemical and Biological Crimes. The Guide was fully funded by the European Union within the framework of its CBRN Centres of Excellence Initiative. A second guide, the Prosecutors Guide to Radiological and Nuclear Crimes, has also been developed and will be published in May 2024.

This webinar is the first in a series of two webinars which have been developed jointly between the IAP Global Training Academy and UNICRI. The second webinar, on the prosecution of radiological and nuclear crimes, will take place on 18 July at 11:00 hrs CEST.
