The side event, organized by the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), will discuss how Big Data Analytics and Visualization can contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda. Big Data technology can be used to examine large data sets, containing a variety of data types, and uncover hidden patterns and correlations.
UNICRI briefed different Director Generals of the European Commission on the infiltration of organized crime in food business and bioterrorism through the use of biotechnology. Organized by the Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE), the meeting aimed at discussing possible forms of cooperation in the area of Big Data analytics and visualization, in cooperation also with the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). On that occasion, a “knowledge hour” was also organized by the DG to sensitize the staff to issues related to food fraud.

On 4-5 July 2016 the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) organized the workshop on “Using big data analytics to reinforce security.” The workshop took place at the Palais des Nations, Geneva and was attended by high level experts in this area from governmental institutions, law enforcement agencies, international organizations, the private sector and the academia.
