Enhancing Middle East CBRN Safety and Security: Regional Action Plan Workshop

 

Within the framework of the European Union Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear Centres of Excellence (EU CBRN CoE) Initiative, a regional Action Plan Workshop for the Middle East was organized by the Regional CBRN CoE Secretariat with the support of UNICRI  from 09-11 July 2024 in Amman, Jordan. The event, aimed to discuss the Regional Action Plan (RAP) to develop a comprehensive framework to address the multifaceted challenges posed by chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats in the region.

Combating organised crime and Illicit Financial Flows (IFFs), and recovering illicitly-obtained assets, requires multiple policy areas and transnational cooperation.

Azerbaijan’s strategic position is particularly attractive to organised criminal groups motivated to carry out smuggling operations and other illicit activity.

Azerbaijan’s crime areas of priority concern include drug trafficking, human trafficking and migrant smuggling, and the smuggling of counterfeit goods.

On 1 March 2021, UNICRI and Global Affairs Canada signed a multi-year agreement for the implementation of the project “CONTACT – Southeast Asia – Enhancing capacities to prevent the trafficking of radiological and nuclear (RN) material in Southeast Asia.”

The Ministry of Justice of Italy and the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) on 25 March 2024 signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to further their shared goals and objectives regarding the design and implementation of research and technical cooperation programmes in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice.

First Train-the-Trainers Event in Tunis Empowers Tunisian Authorities to Combat Chemical Weapons Threats 

 

In a significant step forward for the ATLAS project, the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) has successfully concluded the first train-the-trainers event held in Tunis, Tunisia, from 11 to 15 September 2023. The event, which was a key milestone of the ATLAS project, aimed to strengthen Tunisia's capacity to prevent chemical weapons attacks by non-state actors through enhanced intelligence-sharing and inter-agency cooperation mechanisms.

On 6 May 2023, the European Union Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EU CBRN CoE) Risk Mitigation Initiative showcased its projects implemented in Central Asia during the Europe Day Festival organized by the EU Delegation to Uzbekistan in Tashkent.
