Strengthening Biosafety and Biosecurity Capabilities in South Caucasus and Central Asian Countries
UNICRI has been tasked by the European Commission with the overall coordination, provision of technical assistance and monitoring the implementation of twelve projects in South Caucasus (Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia) and Central Asian countries (Tajikistan and Uzbekistan) in the specific field of bio-safety and bio-security. This programme falls under the second phase of the European Commission’s programme entitled Strengthening Biosafety and Biosecurity Capabilities and is funded under the European Union’s Instrument for Stability.
Through these projects UNICRI seeks to raise the capabilities of selected institutes responsible for biosafety and biosecurity in a way that will result in a substantial improvement of the countries’ biosafety and biosecurity situation. The projects focus on upgrading the biosafety and biosecurity related infrastructure of selected laboratories; providing training to the personnel of the countries’ bio-laboratories; and addressing specific biosafety and biosecurity needs of the countries through tailor made projects.
